Quick Answer

A YouTube transcript generator captures spoken audio from a video and turns it into text. Audicap does this inside Chrome by listening to the current tab audio, so it is useful for lectures, tutorials, interviews, podcasts, webinars, and language-learning videos.

The workflow is simple: open a YouTube video, start Audicap from the Chrome toolbar, let the transcript appear live, then export the result as TXT, Markdown, or SRT when you are done.

When YouTube Transcripts Are Most Useful

  • Students who want searchable notes from long lectures.
  • Language learners who need transcript and translation together.
  • Researchers who want to review interviews or talks faster.
  • Creators who need a rough subtitle draft before editing.
  • Professionals who watch training videos and need action notes.

How To Generate A YouTube Transcript In Chrome

  1. Open the YouTube video in a regular Chrome tab.
  2. Click the Audicap icon in the Chrome toolbar.
  3. Choose live transcription and start recording the current tab audio.
  4. Turn on translation if the video is in another language.
  5. Let Audicap build the transcript while the video plays.
  6. Export the transcript as TXT, Markdown, or SRT.

Audicap Compared With YouTube Auto Captions

Live readingOften available when the creator enables captions or auto captions are generated.Creates live transcript text from Chrome tab audio during playback.

Subtitle draftCaption access varies by video.Exports SRT as a draft for review and editing.

Recommended Workflow For Study Notes

For long educational videos, start with the transcript instead of trying to write every sentence manually. Let the video play, then review the transcript after each section. Use the summary feature for key points, and export Markdown if you keep notes in Notion, Obsidian, Google Docs, or another writing tool.

If the video is in another language, turn on live translation early. The translation may not be perfect, especially with fast speech or technical vocabulary, but it can be enough to follow the main ideas without pausing every few seconds.

Troubleshooting

Audicap cannot capture the tab audio

Use a regular YouTube tab, not a Chrome internal page. If Chrome asks for tab capture permission, select the correct tab and keep audio sharing enabled.

The transcript quality is uneven

Transcript accuracy depends on audio quality, speaker clarity, background noise, and specialized vocabulary. For important notes, review and edit the final transcript.

I only need subtitles

Export SRT as a subtitle draft, then review timing and wording before publishing. SRT output is best treated as a starting point, not a final edited caption file.
